Route: Jungfrau – Kranzbergfirn – Aletschhorn
The Great Aletsch Glacier is located in the canton of Valais and forms the largest ice stream in the Alpine arc. This 23-km-long glacier is part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn UNESCO World Heritage Site. Concordia (Konkordiaplatz) is where the Great Aletsch Glacier is formed by the convergence of the Grosse Aletschfirn (from the west), the Jungfraufirn and the Ewigschneefäld (from the north), and the Grüneggfirn (from the east). The medial moraines form when two glaciers converge.
The gently sloping glacial landscape is bounded in the northwest by the mountains Jungfrau (4,158 m above sea level), Gletscherhorn (3,983 m above sea level), and Äberni Flue (3,962 m above sea level). Their connecting ridges also form the cantonal border of Bern and Valais. South of the Grosse Aletschfirn rises the Aletschhorn (4,193 m above sea level).
