Route: Oberhard – Grauholz – Ittigen
The A1 highway is the most important west-east axis for car traffic. It connects the cities of Geneva and St. Gallen and while doing so traverses nine cantons. Behind Urtenen-Schönbühl (527 m above sea level), the A1 crosses the Grauholz hill range (820 m above sea level). This passage used to cause jams, since heavy-load traffic had to slow down at this slight incline. To get rid of this bottleneck, the high-way was expanded to six lanes in 1995.
The historical Grauholz, the site of the battle of the same name in 1798, is crossed under by the SBB (Schweizerische Bundesbahnen, Swiss Federal Railways) in a tunnel with a length of more than 6 km. At its southwestern side lie the suburbs of Bern (540 m above sea level), the Swiss capital.
